If you bid construction work, you already use takeoffs — whether you call them that or not. A construction takeoff (also called a quantity takeoff or material takeoff) is the process of measuring a set of plans to determine exactly how much of everything a project needs: cubic yards of concrete, linear feet of pipe, square feet of drywall, tons of structural steel, fixture counts, door and window schedules — every quantifiable item on the drawings, itemized and counted.
It's the foundation every estimate is built on. Get the takeoff wrong, and everything downstream — your pricing, your bid, your margin — is wrong too, no matter how careful the math is afterward.
